I couldn’t hide Madison from my wife for much longer and needed to bring her in on the plan. I pulled my car into the driveway at our home in Mt Lawley, Perth, clicked the remote and waited while the large steel gates parted to let me in.

The security lights flicked on as I drove down the pebbled driveway. Cecilia wondered out from the front door and waited for me on the front porch. I waved and smiled hoping she’d be in a good mood. Nowadays I couldn’t tell what sort of reception I’d get from her and a part of me dreaded seeing her to tell her the news.

“I didn’t know you were joining us tonight,” she said, as I walked up the concrete stairs and kissed her right cheek.

She flinched a little but let me continue to wrap my arms around her. “I’m only here for one night. I’ll be heading back tomorrow morning.” I pulled her closer and nuzzled the top of her hair. “I’ve missed you.”

“Careful you’ll crush my blouse. I’m meeting the ladies for book club tonight.” She pushed her head back and looked up at me. “Now, tell me why you’re really here. Did you miss my cooking?”

I tried to kiss her on the mouth but she pulled away.

“You know me so well,” I said.

I hooked my arm around her waist and led her inside into the kitchen. “I wanted to bring you a present.”

“Really?”

I nodded. “It’s something you’ll love. But before I give it to you how’s your father?”

On the kitchen counter sat five books on top of each other. She reached out and straightened the pile with her fingers until each book sat perfectly aligned. “Dad is the same. They’ve increased his pain medication.” Her fingers tapped the side of the books. “It’s hard watching him in so much pain.” She pushed her shoulders back. “I know this is part of the process but… why can’t he go peacefully and without pain?”

I wrapped my arms around her and this time she didn’t flinch. On the rare occasions she let me near I enjoyed the closeness, because she softened the beast that surged through me, and I saw a glimpse of the man I could be. The closeness didn’t last long—a few seconds—but it was enough to understand that what was inside of me wasn’t right. I whispered, “I’m sorry for everything.”

She recoiled again, placed a hand on my chest and pushed back. “What have you done?”

Cecilia knew. She always did. I’d learnt a long time ago lying to her was useless. “You go to the book club and we’ll talk later.”

“No, tell me now.”

I took a deep breath in and pulled her close. She squirmed in my arms and tried to wriggle free. I tightened my hold. “I promise everything is okay.”

She stilled in my arms. “Please tell me you haven’t found someone else?”

I didn’t respond.

“Lance… you promised me you’d always run things past me first. We agreed I’d give the go ahead.
